The Scariest Things are the Simplest Things

Newness

One of my many cats, whom I nicknamed Jerkface (he's a very vain, emotional, young brat that will literally shove another cat away to get a pat in its place), was watching the fish in my tank last week as my sister was cleaning. She set up the vaccuum, opened the tinted glass door of the tank stand to get at the dust bunnies, and turned the vaccuum on.

'Jerkface' freaked and made a run for it.

And slammed into the glass door.

The door broke.

And he broke his tooth.

I feel bad for him because now it has to be removed, but at the same time, serves the little jerk right.

Freaky Links

Can't say that I did much else this week. My friends and I did a little Youtube hunt to try and find the freakiest things available on the site -- you know, ghosts, chupacabras, alien sighting, that sort of thing. I was mostly disappointed, but then when I was browsing some Something Awful forum threads, someone mentioned number stations, which are (in a nutshell) mysterious shortwave radio channels that transmit random coded messages in the form of freaky music, tones, and voices that no one will claim responsibility for. Apparently Lost makes use of them in its mythology, but I don't watch Lost, so I have no clue if that's true. Something tells me I should start.

Bottom line? THOSE really disturb me. If you're in the mood to be freaked out, check out the Internet Archive's collection. You can also find a few recordings on Youtube.

So far, the one that's the freakiest to me is the The Buzzer. The constant tone is unsettling to say the least, and its context is even more so. It plays the same buzzing noise almost all day, all the time, but you can hear stuff in the background meaning it's being recorded in real-time, and once every couple of years someone says something in code to the mic.

I think I'd pee if I ever heard one in real life, but now there's a part of me that thinks that the Lincolnshire Poacher recording would make a cool ringtone.
